What Makes Kansas City Homes Different
Much of Kansas City’s south-side character comes from the Country Club District, the planned neighborhoods J.C. Nichols developed in stages between 1906 and 1950. Streets like Brookside and Sunset Hill were laid out with homes in everything from Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival to Prairie School and Arts and Crafts, and a lot of those 1920s-era houses were built when narrow-strip solid oak was simply what went down in a quality home.
That history is why refinishing is such a big part of what we do on this side of town. Plenty of these pre-war homes still have their original wood waiting under a few decades of carpet, and bringing it back is almost always a better value than replacing it. Closer to the river and up in the Northland, the housing is newer, which leans more toward fresh installs.
Kansas City’s humid continental climate matters too. Summers here are warm and humid while winters run cold and dry, and solid wood reacts to that seasonal swing by expanding and tightening through the year.
